REVOLUTIONARY ROAD (2008) Directed by Sam Mendes
OK, I’ll admit, I was so interested to watch this because it’s Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio back together in the same movie after more than 10 years. It’s like meeting familiar friends.
The story follows the lives of a young couple, played by Winslet and DiCaprio. Equally miserable in their own, separate lives, April (Winslet) longs for more than her mundane, domestic existence and Frank (typical cliche) wants out of a job he hates.
There’s something missing from this movie but I can’t pinpoint it exactly. The acting was, without a doubt, amazing. I don’t think anybody would have a problem with Winslet’s and DiCaprio’s acting. It’s…the story. The story itself was missing something. It was…DULL. I have a feeling that this is just a poor adaptation of the book (1961 novel by Richard Yates).
The characters themselves were so hard to sympathise with. I really had a hard time choosing which of them was the lesser evil, because I felt I had to take somebody’s side. I had a difficult time understanding this movie. Not in the way that I don’t understand its plot, but…I just don’t understand the objective behind it. I don’t know what to do with it.
RATING: a generous 6 out of 10. Partly because of the beautiful cinematography, mostly because of the actors.
